Global Payments upgrades Genius POS as Worldpay approaches

Global Payments announced fresh updates to its Genius point‑of‑sale system on Tuesday while confirming that the regulatory green light will push its $22.7 billion acquisition of Worldpay into the first quarter of 2026.

Regulatory approval trims the timeline for a major acquisition

The United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority cleared the deal on Oct. 20, allowing the company to move the closing date forward from the earlier mid‑year estimate. The approval follows the announcement made in May that Global Payments and FIS Inc. would combine forces to buy the processing giant.

GTCR, an investment firm, will also sell its stake in Worldpay as part of the transaction, which will reshape Global Payments into a pure‑play acquiring processor. At the same time, the firm agreed to offload its card‑issuing division to FIS for $13.5 billion, a move the CEO described as a step toward “a single, unified company worldwide.”

Analysts note that the narrowed timeline could help the company tap Worldpay’s merchant network sooner, potentially accelerating revenue growth once the integration is complete.

Genius POS receives new features and geographic expansion

Since its launch in May, the Genius platform has been rolled out to additional merchant markets, with enterprise customers added in June and a handful of new users joining in July. The company says roughly 90 % of Genius sales are to fresh customers, indicating solid market traction.

Handheld devices have been incorporated into the Genius suite, and the system is now live in the United Kingdom and Austria. Germany and Australia are slated for launch later this year, the CEO said. The rollout has been, oddly enough, smoother than anticipated, though it continues to demand significant engineering focus.

“In point of sale and software, our priority remains on Genius,” the CEO told analysts. “Genius is resonating in the market.” The statement shows the technology’s role as a growth engine for the firm.

For merchants, the timing means they can expect a broader suite of integrated services sooner, potentially reducing the need to stitch together multiple vendors. It also suggests that as the platform scales, pricing and support structures may become more favorable, though the exact impact will depend on adoption rates in the upcoming markets.

The company is also expanding its sales force, aiming for 500 representatives in North America alone. This hiring push is intended to boost the volume of Genius transactions, which the CEO described as “a focal point for us in terms of driving growth.”

“We’re excited to bring those distribution channels to life,” he added, referring to the merchant connections that Worldpay will supply once the acquisition closes.

Quarterly results showed $2 billion in adjusted net revenue, a 2 % rise year over year. Net income reached $635 million, double the figure from the prior year.
